Art Nouveau Scalloped Compote
An unusual late 19th century decorative compote, manufactured in circa 1890 by the well respected J&G Meakin (Ltd), Hanley, England. The compote reflects the mood of the Art Nouvear era, boasting organic lines and natural forms. It is skillfully hand painted with purple coloured floral motifs, classic forms and raised shell moldings. The rim is gently scalloped which further enhances the shell patterns and organic look.
DIMENSIONS: Compote height 12cm - Compote diameter 21cm - Base diameter 11.7cm
Condition: In good antique condition. The compote dish has visible crazing and cutlery scratch marks. There is a large chip to the underside of compote plate, however this is not noticeable from the top and only very slightly from the side (see photo). There are a few tiny firing marks which are not so visible as the eye is attracted away from theses. The purple colour is still rich and bright The compote is over 100 years old and is in very good usable condition. All these characteristics are commensurate with older pieces, particularly antiques.
